School-related Work Opportunities:

Introduction to HCSR and the Career Guide

HCSR was organized to help students find people in the business community who can help students explore career options and find jobs.  The primary resources they provide are the Career Guide--a printed directory of opportunities and other resource information--and its companion on-line E-Guide.

How did HCSR get started?

Hanover Industrial Air Park Business Association (HIAPBA) formed a partnership with Hanover County Schools in 1995 to get the word to Hanover students about jobs and training opportunities just waiting to be shared.  In 2002, HIAPBA helped form HCSR for the purpose of printing this Career Guide.

The financial support for HCSR comes from Hanover business organizations (HIAPBA, HABCC, and HBC), the Hanover business community, Hanover County Department of Economic Development, Hanover County Public Schools and from interested citizens like you.

How can students use the Career Guide?

Many students graduate from high school and have no idea about the work they would like to do.  Many don’t know the kind of training that they need in order to get certain jobs. Although many students go to college after high school, some never graduate.  Others graduate from college and still have no clear career direction!  Talking with employers and gaining actual work experience before having to make these decisions can help make better use of time and money.

The function of the Career Guide is to help students connect with people in the “real world” of business who can answer questions about the work they do.  They can offer actual work experience through part-time jobs, internships, etc., to help students decide what they want to do when they start working full-time.  These businesses can tell students about the training and/or college courses needed for a particular job.  They may hire students to work in a permanent job after graduation.  In many cases, they will even provide the career training needed or will pay tuition costs for additional training or college courses.

The Career Guide provides information about businesses willing to help students build and plan their future careers.   It includes tools and tips for making contacts with these businesses and lots of other useful information.
